Maximising the value of your static caravan

Static caravans are typically a big investment, so when it comes to selling up you want to ensure that you’re getting the best possible price.

Your caravan will depreciate in value as it gets older and newer models come out, but there are still a number of things that you can do to maximise the return on your investment.

Keep your caravan in good repair

It seems like quite a straightforward thing to mention, but the general condition of your caravan really does have a big impact on its resale value. Check the furniture and fittings for wear and tear, paintwork for scuffs and remember to monitor the condition of the exterior too. The aim is to keep your static in a condition as close to the original as possible.

Restore original features

Whilst it’s nice to add personal touches to your holiday home, this actually has a detrimental effect on its value. In much the same way that you paint all your walls an inoffensive shade of magnolia when selling a house, any paint colours, curtains, carpets or decorative features you’ve had over the years need to be restored to the original decor scheme.

Maintain the chassis

If you’re lucky enough to have purchased a caravan with a fully galvanised chassis, chances are your chassis won’t be overly susceptible to rust and corrosion. If, on the other hand, the chassis is part-galvanised or painted steel, your maintenance schedule becomes much more important. The National Association of Caravan Owners has good advice on chassis care, which we recommend following in order to keep your static in a saleable condition.

Keep the original furniture

You might have replaced some of the fitted furniture, reupholstered some seating or installed a completely new kitchen. All of this will have a negative effect on the value of your caravan – even if you think it’s nicer, more modern or of a higher value than the original. Admittedly, this can be a tough one to restore – once you install a new kitchen, there’s no going back – but bear in mind that if you aren’t offered the price you expected, this could be a likely cause.

Restore to factory settings

The single best thing you can do to maximise the value of your static caravan is to keep in as close to the original condition as possible. It’s not just about keeping it in pristine condition, you want to keep it looking exactly like it did in the brochure when you bought it. All the furniture, the fittings, the decor – the caravan has its highest value when it is fully fitted out with all of its original features.
